Lisbon, Portugal's vibrant capital, is an incredible base for exploring the surrounding regions. Whether you’re craving picturesque beaches, historic towns, or stunning natural landscapes, Lisbon offers easy access to some of the most charming and diverse destinations in the country. If you have a few extra days during your trip or simply want to break away from the city, here are some of the best day trips from Lisbon that will help you experience the beauty and culture of Portugal beyond its capital.

1. Sintra – A Fairytale Escape

Located just 40 minutes from Lisbon, Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like a fairytale come to life. The town is renowned for its romantic palaces, lush gardens, and mystical atmosphere. Start your visit with a trip to the iconic Pena Palace, an extraordinary blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles that sits atop a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding area. Next, explore the whimsical Quinta da Regaleira, a magical estate filled with hidden tunnels, secret gardens, and a mysterious initiation well. Finally, don’t miss the Moorish Castle, which offers sweeping views of Sintra and its surroundings. Sintra is perfect for those seeking history, architecture, and natural beauty all in one place.

When we visited it was raining, but the beauty of the place was not diminished at all. I loved how each part of the castle was a vibrant different color. The Pena Palace has 3 main parts, the red (15th century monestary ruins, the yellow (the addition) and the blue (tiled in an Islamic style). Overall the astle gets its design from many different parts of the world including Africa and China.

2. Cascais – Coastal Charm and Relaxation

If you're looking for a day trip that combines coastal beauty with charming streets and a laid-back atmosphere, head to Cascais. Just 30 minutes from Lisbon, this coastal town offers golden beaches, a picturesque marina, and a lovely town center. Stroll along the seafront promenade, visit the impressive Cascais Marina, or relax at Praia da Rainha beach. If you're in the mood for culture, visit Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães, an elegant museum set in a historic mansion overlooking the ocean. Cascais is also home to some excellent seafood restaurants where you can sample fresh Portuguese dishes. This is the perfect destination for those who want to relax by the sea and enjoy the beauty of the Lisbon coastline.

3. Évora – Ancient Roman and Moorish Heritage

For history buffs, Évora, located about 90 minutes east of Lisbon, is an absolute must-see. This medieval town is known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, Moorish influence, and stunning Gothic architecture. Begin with the impressive Temple of Diana, an ancient Roman temple that dates back to the 1st century AD. One of Évora’s most famous attractions is the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos), a chilling yet fascinating chapel adorned with human bones. And one of my husbands favorite stops, he especially loved the saying above the chapel door which read:

Óbidos is also known for its delicious cherry liqueur, ginjinha, which you can sample in one of the local shops. The town is particularly charming during the summer, when it hosts festivals and events like the Óbidos Medieval Market.
