What’s in My Carry-On?

All My Essential Items for a Comfortable and Productive Journey

Packing for a trip can be a mix of excitement and stress, especially when you’re trying to fit everything you’ll need into your carry-on. Over the years, I’ve fine-tuned my packing routine and created a carry-on essentials list to keep me comfortable, entertained, and ready for anything during long flights or layovers.

This is my go-to backpack. I have both the larger one above, and the mini version. But this is my preferred carry-on bag since it hold so much stuff without being uncomfortable to wear. It has places for everything and the straps are super comfy. Go here, if you want to grab one for yourself (I make no commission - just sharing the love!)

Here’s a breakdown of the items I never leave home without:

1. Entertainment and Relaxation

  • Kindle
Whether I’m in the mood for fiction, a self-help book, or something new, my Kindle is a must-have for easy reading on the go. With a lightweight design and thousands of books at my fingertips, it's perfect for both short trips and long-haul flights.

  • Notebook and Pen
I always like to jot down ideas, thoughts, or even sketches while traveling. A small notebook and pen help me stay productive and creative, especially when inspiration strikes in an airport lounge or during a quiet moment on the plane.

  • Coloring Pencils
Sometimes, I just need a creative outlet. I keep a small set of coloring pencils and a mini coloring book to unwind, relax, and disconnect from digital screens during my trip. It’s a fun way to pass the time and de-stress!

2. Tech and Charging Essentials

  • Earbuds
I can’t survive a flight without my earbuds! Whether I’m listening to a podcast, watching a movie, or just tuning out the noise, these are an essential part of my carry-on.

  • External Battery and Charging Cable
With all my devices, I need to make sure they stay charged. A portable external battery and a charging cable are key to keeping my phone, tablet, or Kindle powered up for long flights or when outlets aren’t easily available.

  • Cell Phone
My cell phone is a must-have for staying connected, keeping up with messages, and capturing memories during the flight. I also rely on it for entertainment and navigation when I reach my destination.

  • Phone Stand
A phone stand is a game-changer for hands-free use on flights. Whether I’m watching a movie, following directions, or even attending a virtual meeting, a stand makes it so much easier to keep my phone at the perfect angle without having to hold it. Some airlines have these built in, which is nice but you never know so its best to be prepared. (HACK: Use a Ziploc bag and anchor it with the tray table in the upright locked position)

3. Hydration and Snacks

  • Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated during a flight is crucial. I love my collapsible water bottle—it’s lightweight, eco-friendly, and easy to refill once I’m through security.

  • Gum
Chewing gum helps relieve pressure on my ears during takeoff and landing, and it’s also a great little refreshment when I need a quick pick-me-up during the flight.

  • Chocolate-Covered Pretzels
A sweet and salty snack is a must! These chocolate-covered pretzels are my go-to travel snack. They satisfy my cravings and keep me energized throughout my journey.

4. Comfort and Personal Care

  • Neck Pillow
A neck pillow is my ticket to comfort during long flights. It supports my head while I sleep, preventing neck pain and making those naps much more pleasant.

  • Fuzzy Socks
No matter the season, I always bring fuzzy socks to keep my feet warm and cozy, especially during long-haul flights or overnight trips. Plus, they make the flight feel a little more like home.

  • Shawl that Doubles as a Blanket
Planes can get chilly, and my shawl is the perfect way to stay warm. It’s versatile, too—I can use it as a blanket if the cabin gets extra cold or wrap it around me for extra comfort.

  • Hand Sanitizer and Wet Wipes
Hygiene is important, especially during travel. Hand sanitizer is a must-have, as are wet wipes for quick clean-ups—whether it's wiping down the tray table or refreshing my face.

  • Lip Balm
The dry air on planes can do a number on my lips, so lip balm is always within reach. A good, hydrating balm keeps my lips soft and prevents any discomfort from the cabin's low humidity.

  • Hand Lotion
With all the hand washing and sanitizing, my hands can get dry. I always pack a small bottle of hand lotion to keep my skin feeling soft and moisturized.

  • Face Wipes
These are great for a quick refresh during long flights. I can wipe away the travel grime and feel a little more put together when I land. They're especially useful if I don’t want to go through the hassle of a full skincare routine on the plane.

5. Health and Wellness

  • Medications/Prescriptions:
I always carry a small pouch with any necessary medications or prescriptions. Whether it’s something I take regularly or something I might need in case of an emergency, having it on hand ensures I'm covered throughout my trip without any stress about running out.

  • Daily Vitamins:
I bring my daily vitamins to maintain my usual health routine while on the go. Staying consistent with my vitamins helps support my immune system and energy levels, even when my travel schedule can be unpredictable.

  • Hand Sanitizer:
I make sure to have hand sanitizer with me to keep my hands clean and free from germs, especially in places like airports, on planes, or during layovers where I might not always have access to soap and water. It’s a quick and easy way to stay hygienic on the move.

  • Cough Drops:
Cough drops are essential for soothing a dry throat or cough, especially during long flights or trips in colder climates. They help keep me comfortable and prevent my throat from becoming irritated, making the journey more pleasant.

  • Tissues:
I always pack tissues to be prepared for unexpected sniffles, allergies, or even spills. Whether I’m sneezing, wiping my face, or needing to clean up something, tissues are one of those items that are small but incredibly useful when you need them.

  • Emergen-C:
I carry Emergen-C for an extra immune boost, especially during busy travel times when I’m in contact with lots of people. It's loaded with Vitamin C and other nutrients, helping to keep my energy levels up and my immune system strong, which is key for staying healthy during and after travel.

6. Hair Care and Grooming

  • Hair Ties and Bobby Pins
I keep a few hair ties and bobby pins on hand for those moments when my hair just won’t cooperate. They’re great for putting my hair up on the plane or keeping it in place during layovers.

  • Folding Brush
A compact folding brush is a lifesaver when I need to quickly tidy up my hair after a nap or when I’ve just come off a long flight. It’s lightweight and small enough to fit into my carry-on without taking up too much space.

  • Colgate Wisps
Oral hygiene is important to me, even when I’m traveling. Colgate Wisps are the perfect solution for freshening up my breath and brushing my teeth when I can’t get to a full restroom. They’re tiny and convenient, so I never have to worry about feeling less than fresh.

  • Makeup Essentials:

    • Lip Gloss or Chapstick:
I always carry a lip gloss or chapstick to keep my lips hydrated and smooth throughout the day. Whether it’s for a bit of shine or just to prevent dryness, it’s a must-have for quick touch-ups.

    • Mascara:
A coat of mascara is perfect for opening up my eyes and giving my lashes a little extra volume. It’s my go-to product when I want to look refreshed and put together without a full makeup routine.

    • Eye Cream:
I bring eye cream to refresh and hydrate the delicate skin around my eyes. It helps to reduce puffiness, smooth fine lines, and give me a more awake appearance, especially after long flights or sleepless nights.

Final Thoughts: Ready for Anything

With these essential items in my carry-on, I feel prepared for whatever my trip throws my way. Whether I need comfort, entertainment, a quick refresh, or to stay healthy, these carefully selected items help me stay organized and relaxed during my travels.
